WHO:
Ka Leo paints over message written by UH students, faculty, and staff that was included in a mural for the Ka Leo Arts Festival.
WHAT:
Ka Leo paints over student, faculty, and staff mural. The mural, which was approved by UH Manoa, was a painting that raised awareness about the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna a Wakea. Along with the painting the artists included a message that said,
UH CANNOT BE A HAWAIIAN PLACE OF LEARNING WHILE LEADING THE DESECRATION OF MAUNA A WAKEA.
HEY UH, BE ACCOUNTABLE…
BE A HAWAIIAN PLACE OF LEARNING…
STAND WITH THE PEOPLE….
STOP THE DESECRATION
STOP THE THIRTY METER TELESCOPE!
The Ka Leo Arts Festival painted over the message with “Ka Leo Arts Fest”.
WHERE: The mural was painted on the UH Manoa campus and was intended to be apart of the Ka Leo Arts Festival.
WHEN: This happened in 2013.
WHY:
The intent for the Ka Leo Arts Festival was to express creativity. However, Ka Leo felt that the message hauMANA wrote on their mural was inappropriate so they decided to censor their message. The message was intended to express where Native Hawaiians stand in the UH community. We want to be noticed, we want to be treated fairly, and we do not want our culture to be forgotten.
