University of Hawaii students and staff vs. the government
What:
University students were protesting the use of the labs and libraries, which were being used for military research.
There was an interview conducted between University faculty as well as students where they asked the opinions of those who it affects the most. There were mixed reviews in the interviews, some believed it brought in money, while others thought the University students should have access to the findings of the research since they paid to have accesses to research and findings through tuition.
Classified research is top secret research done for or by the DOD. Results and research is not made public and you need to have clearance to see any findings. Proprietary research is privately funded research done at the university labs and using university equipment. Results of the studies can be made private. Whereas open research is when the results and why the research is done is made public.
In 2007, the University had to come to a conclusion of weather or not to allow classified research to be done at the university. University of Hawaiʻi released a report declaring all classified research is prohibited at any UH campus, and if at any point research becomes classified they have to move off campus. Classified and Proprietary research is not to be used by any tenure professors, student theses, and dissertations. The university will publish an annual list of all classified and proprietary research projects with brief descriptions.
